River Valley Puppies Rescue - Day 1

02-27-2009

On February 24, 2009 Best Friends was called in by the Missouri Department of Agriculture to assist with a heartbreaking case. A breeder facing charges for not having a license for his 200 dogs, had set fire to his house and kennel. River Valley Puppies Kennels burned to the ground, but thankfully, the dogs were safe because they were loose on the property. In this first of several videos, you'll meet the dogs and puppies who are now looking ahead to a better life.

what will they do to this man.  Will he face arson chargers as well as cruelty charges?  The laws must be changed to protect man's best friend.  This is so sad and disgusting.

It never ceases to amaze me the total selfishness and ignorance to animal cruelty that persons can show.  These beautiful dogs are fortunate that such a dumb blank could have killed them.  Maybe he was showing that he gives up and did not want them harmed.  I hope he is never allowed to have a dog again.

It sucks, but I doubt if they will do a thing to this breeder. These are states that just have not laws for this and I am sure the authorities have not the time nor the resources to prosecute this breeder. You are talking Ozarks where many people treat animals like live trash.

What is it going to take to make every state put a stop to this disgusting practice!! I'd like to get my hands on the people who run these deplorable places....they'd be given first hand knowledge of the hell they make these poor babies live in...of that I could guarantee!!

It just breaks my heart, all those beautiful pups.  It's like watching sex trade workers, it really is -- all those mother dogs.  So disgusting I don't even have words.

What will become of all these beautiful dogs and puppies?  Where in their future will there be wonderful homes and love for them?

There is a bright future for these dogs & puppies.  They will be adopted by fabulous, loving homes.  Their best days are ahead of them.  It's so exciting!  For the springers, look for them to be posted on www.springerrescue.org.

Most states ALREADY have laws against this kind of behavior - like so many things we do NOT need more laws -we need enforcment of existing laws!!! This was an unlicensed kennel but with 200 dogs it should have been - why does it take something like this for action to occur. Let's get FUNDING for existing laws not more FEEL GOOD laws that will continue to do nothing if not enforced!

My heart is hurting from seeing this story.  Good luck to those who work on the front lines of animal abuses, and thank you.

I WISH I could adopt one.  We just put our 15-year-old female GSP down the end of October, 2008, so our 11-year-old neutered male needs a buddy.  My husband doesn't want any more dogs, but I will work on him for as long as it takes to be able to adopt one and give one a great home!

This is such a tradegy!  It is hard to imagine that someone can do this to an animal.  I would be delighted to help in any way possible.

I am a volunteer with Midwest PAWs and I just wanted to spread the word that we took these babies and now need help with money for vet bills, supplies, fostering and of course adopting! Check out our website at www.midwestpaws.com

Thanks!

What a sad story.  I can't imagine what this guy must be going through to think he had so little to live for.  Hope they can get him some help as well as the dogs that need a home.  Luckily we have laws that when followed bring these type of problems in to the open.  Just wish they were a little more timely in enforcing them.  Sadly this is the type of thing that pushes the animal rightist to want more laws that will finally make it illegal to own a pet.  We are fighting them now in several states.  Just is no end in sight.

As the owner of 5 rescued GSPs (2 now over the Rainbow Bridge), I applaud the rescuers, foster families, and (eventually) forever homes.  "Don't buy while shelter dogs die."  Ezzy, you are so wrong, and you are fighting the wrong battle!  The current laws (where they exist) lack power, funds and staff for enforcement, and judicial will.  In Massachusetts, where there are strong spay and neuter laws, the problem of puppy mills and homeless dogs is far less than in other states.  Be realistic: No group is ever going to stop Americans from owning dogs as pets!  We love our dogs even more than our guns and ballots!  Yes, there are a few way-out-there, off-the-wall animal rights groups, but the vast majority of rescue groups, humane societies, SPCAs, etc. want everyone who is able to afford and care for dogs to have them!  Do NOT judge everyone on the basis of a nutty few!  Put your time and resources towards fighting puppy mills, useless laws, and lack of spay/neuter regulations.  We are not "lucky" to have the laws we currently have, and they are rarely enforced in a "timely" manner (or in a manner that is meaningful).  If they were, there would be less of these tragedies rather than more of them.  You're on the wrong side of this issue.  You can't feel sorry for the dogs in the video, and accept the current laws.  You are either part of the problem, or part of the solution; there is no fence-sitting on this issue.

what a sad story and where is the person behind this?  free to do this again?  what or who stops or monitors this person?  please hope the justice sysytem will take care of a person who could do this to those poor dogs.
